USF can help you earn a degree — whether you started your degree years ago or recently finished a two-year degree. You will also need to gain one or two years of full-time accounting experience under the supervision of a licensed CPA before you can work as a CPA, depending on your state’s requirements. CPA licenses in South Dakota must be renewed annually between July 1 to June 30 each year. On the renewal form, continuing professional education hours should be reported.

All candidates must complete at least 24 semester hours of accounting courses, including a course in elementary principles of accounting. South Dakota applicants need to complete 150 semester hours of college education before they can sit for the CPA exam. This must include a Bachelor’s or higher degree in accounting, with at least 24 hours in Bookkeeping South Dakota accounting courses and 24 hours in business courses. Prospective South Dakota CPAs must earn at least one year of experience in accounting prior to becoming licensed. To work in attest services after licensure, the experience must include 375 work hours in audit, compilation, or review. For the 2,000-hour total, qualifying work includes audit, review, compilation, tax, management advisory or consulting, or academia utilizing accounting skills. The experience must be verified by the candidate’s supervisor/employer and a licensed CPA. Note that candidates working for a licensed CPA firm must obtain a CPA certificate within 90 days of meeting the experience requirement.
